State of the Peace and Stability Operations Industry
Second Annual Survey 2007

J. J. MESSNER
YLANA GRACIELLI FERNANDES RODRIGUES

While the Peace and Stability Operations Industry is becoming increasingly utilized and influential, current information about it is largely misconstrued and incomplete at best. It is remarkable how little is really known about this critically important sector.

The State of the Peace and Stability Operations Industry Survey is the only study of its kind in the world. The annual Survey was first published in 2006 by the International Peace Operations Association (IPOA), a trade association for private companies that operate in conflict and post-conflict zones and disaster relief. The first survey also focused exclusively on private security.

In 2007, IPOA passed on the Survey to the Peace Operations Institute (POI). The Survey was expanded from simply focusing on private security to encompass the entire private sector, including companies involved in logistics, training, demining and development, among others.

The State of the Peace and Stability Operations Industry Survey attempts to provide definitive insight into the industry - its size, activities and areas of operation. It also seeks to provide the general public and policy-makers with a more accurate picture of the industry and a better understanding of its capacities and potential.
